FASHION in 1985In the 1980's there were popular styles in each year like in the early 80s, style like the leotards and dance wear, were very dominant. Then emerged the valley girl, the Miami vice look, the preppy look, and of course everyone wanted to dress like Michael Jackson, and Madonna. Teased hair, loud makeup and neon were an important part of this style. Everything was very bright colored and there was no shortage of accessories including buttons, bangles and hoop earrings with your name in them were a necessity.
The waistline was a little high and you could wear skin-tight cotton stirrup pants with leggings and a giant turtleneck sweater one day, a crew neck sweater with a printed turtle neck underneath (with pearls) and straight leg jeans the next, and parachute pants with a small v-neck top and a high-waist belt the next. And let us not forget the Adidas track suits, jean jackets, Sebagos, and Sporto duck shoes But amiss all of this, the subculture of the 1980s was also popular with fashion styles such as heavy metal style, punk style, rockabilly, and preppy. |

MUSIC in 1985
This was the decade when musical boundaries came tumbling down, when pop and rock and soul were artfully blended, VH1 (originally an initialism of Video Hits One) launched on January 1, 1985, Aretha Franklin, the first lady of soul, crossed over the line with Who's Zoomin' Who and Chaka Khan mixed pop and soul and disco and hip hop in "I Feel For You." But what many didn't realize at the time that this crossover contagion left the door open for the rise of hip hop -- genuine, basic, hot-off-the-streets rap that celebrated the roots of its artisans.
